Adyashanti — whose adopted name means "primordial peace" — is an American-born spiritual teacher whose direct, unadorned pointing toward awakening has made him one of the most respected voices in contemporary non-duality. Born Stephen Gray in Cupertino, California, in 1962, he grew up as an athlete and competitive cyclist before turning, at nineteen, toward the question of enlightenment. He spent his twenties studying Zen Buddhism under teacher Arvis Joen Justi, immersing himself in meditation alongside the writings of Christian mystics — until a series of profound awakening experiences resolved his seeking. At his teacher's request, he began teaching in 1996. Adyashanti's approach refuses easy categorisation. Though rooted in Zen, his teaching draws freely from Advaita Vedanta, Christian mysticism, and his own direct experience, always circling back to a single invitation: to realise the truth of what you are, beneath the story of "me." Through books such as The End of Your World, Falling into Grace, and The Way of Liberation, and through years of retreats, talks, and online courses, he has offered a spirituality stripped of dogma — clear, grounded, and quietly radical. His 2014 appearance on Oprah Winfrey's Super Soul Sunday brought his teachings to a far wider audience. In October 2023, Adyashanti stepped back from active teaching. His body of work — eleven books plus an extensive archive of recorded talks and guided meditations — remains available through Open Gate Sangha, the non-profit he co-founded with his wife Mukti in 1996, ensuring that his teachings continue to serve those drawn to the possibility of genuine inner freedom. For anyone ready to look directly at the nature of their own awareness, Adyashanti remains an extraordinarily lucid guide.
