Born Miguel Ángel Ruiz Macías in 1952, the youngest of thirteen children in a poor rural family, he grew up inside a living lineage: his mother, Sarah, was a curandera — a traditional healer — and his grandfather a nagual, a shaman in the Toltec tradition.
