Dr Eben Alexander

Dr. Eben Alexander is the neurosurgeon whose journey into the borderlands of death produced one of the most talked-about spiritual books of the twenty-first century. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1953 and adopted into a distinguished medical family — his father was a renowned academic neurosurgeon — Alexander seemed destined for the operating theatre. He earned his medical degree at Duke and spent twenty-five years as an academic neurosurgeon, including fifteen at Boston's Brigham & Women's Hospital, the Children's Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. Like most of his colleagues, he regarded near-death experiences as hallucinations of a failing brain — sincere, perhaps, but scientifically impossible. Then, in the predawn hours of November 10, 2008, a rare and devastating bacterial meningitis attacked his brain, plunging him into a coma for seven days. As his doctors weighed ending treatment, Alexander unexpectedly awoke — carrying memories of what he describes as an odyssey through realms of existence more real than this one: a journey through darkness into a luminous valley, guided by an angelic presence, culminating in an encounter with an infinite source of unconditional love. His account, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife (2012), rocketed to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, put the words "Heaven Is Real" on the cover of Newsweek, and carried him from Oprah's Super Soul Sunday to lecture halls worldwide. His subsequent books, The Map of Heaven and Living in a Mindful Universe (co-written with Karen Newell), argue his central conviction: that consciousness is not produced by the brain, but is fundamental to the universe itself. His story has attracted sharp scrutiny as well as devotion — journalists and scientists have challenged aspects of his medical narrative and his claim that his brain was fully offline, critiques he firmly disputes — and that very debate has made him a lightning rod in the larger question of what consciousness is. Today, with Newell, he co-teaches through Sacred Acoustics, whose binaural-beat recordings offer listeners a sound-based doorway into the deep meditative states he says reconnect him to what he found in the coma. His invitation to audiences is consistent and heartfelt: consciousness survives, love is the fabric of reality, and each of us can begin exploring that truth now — no near-death experience required.
