Dr Eben Alexander

Dr. Eben Alexander is the neurosurgeon whose journey into the borderlands of death produced one of the most talked-about spiritual books of the twenty-first century. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1953 and adopted into a distinguished medical family — his father was a renowned academic neurosurgeon — Alexander seemed destined for the operating theatre. He earned his medical degree at Duke and spent twenty-five years as an academic neurosurgeon, including fifteen at Boston's Brigham & Women's Hospital, the Children's Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. His subsequent books, The Map of Heaven and Living in a Mindful Universe (co-written with Karen Newell), argue his central conviction: that consciousness is not produced by the brain, but is fundamental to the universe itself.
