Dr. Raymond Moody

Dr. Raymond Moody is the father of the near-death experience — literally: he coined the term. A philosopher before he was a physician, Moody was born in Porterdale, Georgia, in 1944, and earned his BA, MA, and PhD in philosophy at the University of Virginia, where questions about mind, death, and meaning first gripped him. It was as a young philosophy instructor that he began hearing an extraordinary pattern: people who had been revived from clinical death describing strikingly similar journeys — leaving the body, moving through a tunnel, meeting deceased loved ones, encountering a being of light, and returning transformed. He went on to earn his MD, and in 1975 published Life After Life, a careful study of 150 such cases that gave the phenomenon its name. The book detonated quietly across the world: more than 13 million copies sold, a foreword by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, and an entire field of study — near-death research — born in its wake. The New York Times would later call him simply "the father of the near-death experience." What makes Moody singular is his temperament: a lifelong philosopher's caution. For decades, the man who launched the world's fascination with the afterlife openly described himself as an agnostic on the question — collecting cases, refining categories, training hospice workers, clergy, and clinicians in grief support, and always resisting the leap from data to doctrine. His curiosity kept opening new doors: in Reunions he revived the ancient Greek psychomanteum — a mirror-gazing chamber in which the grieving often report vivid reunions with lost loved ones — and in Glimpses of Eternity he documented "shared death experiences," in which healthy bystanders at a deathbed report accompanying the dying partway on their journey. Across eleven books and more than 20 million copies, three appearances with Oprah, and a World Humanitarian Award, his method never changed: listen carefully, take human experience seriously, and follow the question wherever it leads. Now in his eighties, that half-century of listening has finally moved him. His 2023 book, Proof of Life After Life, co-written with Paul Perry, gathers what he considers the seven strongest strands of evidence and — after fifty years of professional restraint — concludes that consciousness survives bodily death. Through the Life After Life Institute he continues to teach, offer online courses and consultations, and mentor the next generation of researchers. For anyone standing at the edge of grief or wondering what awaits us all, Moody offers something rare in this territory: not fervour, but the hard-won conviction of the most careful man in the room.
