Drs. John & Julie Gottman

Drs. John and Julie Gottman are the scientists of love — the husband-and-wife team whose half-century of research transformed relationships from a realm of guesswork into a field with data, predictions, and proven methods. John Gottman's path began improbably: born in the Dominican Republic in 1942 to an Orthodox rabbi father and raised in Brooklyn, he trained first as a mathematician at Fairleigh Dickinson and MIT before psychology claimed him at the University of Wisconsin. At the University of Washington he founded the legendary "Love Lab," where he and collaborator Robert Levenson wired up thousands of couples — tracking heart rates, facial expressions, and the micro-patterns of ordinary conversation — and discovered they could distinguish the "masters" from the "disasters" of relationships with startling accuracy. From that data came concepts now woven into our cultural vocabulary: the Four Horsemen of criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling; the magic ratio of positive to negative interactions; and the finding that 69% of couples' problems are perpetual — rooted in enduring differences, resolvable not by winning but by understanding. Even his love life was empirical: after sixty methodical dates, he met a brilliant clinical psychologist named Julie Schwartz on date sixty-one. Julie Schwartz Gottman, born in Portland in 1951, brought the other half of the equation: the clinician's art. A highly respected psychologist with deep expertise in trauma, she co-created with John the Sound Relationship House theory and Gottman Method Couples Therapy — now among the most practised, evidence-based approaches to couples work in the world — along with the beloved Art & Science of Love workshops. Together they founded the Gottman Institute in Seattle in 1996, through which they have trained tens of thousands of therapists across the globe, written bestsellers including The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, Eight Dates, The Love Prescription, and Fight Right, and built Gottman Connect, bringing their research-backed tools into any couple's living room. Married since 1987 and still writing, teaching, and touring together from their home in Washington State, the Gottmans embody their own findings: that lasting love is not a mystery or a lottery, but a set of learnable skills — turning toward each other's bids for connection, repairing after conflict, honouring each other's dreams. For any couple wondering whether their fighting means they're doomed, the Gottmans bring five decades of evidence and one steady answer: it's not whether you fight, but how — and how you fight can be changed.
