Gangaji — born Merle Antoinette "Toni" Roberson in Texas in 1942 — is an American spiritual teacher and author in the lineage of neo-Advaita, offering a message of startling simplicity: that the peace and fulfillment we spend our lives searching for is already here, present as the very nature of our being. Her path to this recognition was a long and searching one. She grew up in Mississippi, raised a family, worked as an acupuncturist in the San Francisco Bay Area, and explored Zen, Vipassana, and Tibetan Buddhism — yet a deeper restlessness remained. In 1990, on the banks of the Ganges River in India, that search came to an end when she met her teacher, Sri H.W.L. Poonja, known as Papaji. He gave her the name Gangaji and asked her to carry his teaching to the West, telling her, "The Ganga now will flow in the West." At the heart of Gangaji's teaching is the practice of self-inquiry, passed down through Papaji from the great sage Ramana Maharshi. Rather than offering another technique to fix or improve ourselves, she invites people to stop — to turn attention away from the endless activity of the mind and toward the silent, unchanging presence that is always already at rest beneath it. Through satsang, retreats, and books such as The Diamond in Your Pocket, Hidden Treasure, Freedom and Resolve, and You Are That, she gently but persistently points listeners back to the truth of who they are, beneath every story of who they think they should be. For more than three decades, Gangaji has travelled the world sharing this invitation, and through the Gangaji Foundation — based in Ashland, Oregon — she continues to meet a global community spanning some 150 countries via online gatherings, in-person retreats, and a long-running prison outreach program. Warm, direct, and deeply grounded, she reminds each person that freedom is not a distant attainment but a present possibility, available in this very moment to anyone willing to truly look.
