Jonathan Goldman is the founding pioneer of modern sound healing — the writer, musician, and master teacher who, more than anyone alive, established sound as a serious healing modality in the West. His path began in the unlikeliest of places: the late-1970s Boston punk scene, where he played guitar loudly enough to worry about his hearing — until a growing fascination with sound's power to harm turned into a life-defining question about its power to heal. He earned a master's degree in the independent study of sound healing from Lesley University, and in 1982 — decades before sound baths reached every yoga studio — founded the Sound Healers Association, the non-profit he still directs, dedicated to education and awareness of sound and music for healing. Goldman's 1992 book Healing Sounds: The Power of Harmonics became the classic guidebook of the field — now in an award-winning 30th anniversary edition — and introduced techniques used by practitioners worldwide, including "Vowels as Mantras" for chakra chanting and "Overtoning." His studies bridged science and sacred tradition alike: a lecturing member of the International Society for Music and Medicine, he also trained with masters including the Dalai Lama's Gyuto and Gyume monks, and was empowered by the Chant Master of Drepung Loseling Monastery to teach Tibetan Overtone Chanting. As a Grammy-nominated recording artist and president of Spirit Music, he has created more than twenty-five acclaimed albums — including the iconic Chakra Chants, a double Visionary Award winner later honoured as an Iconic Album, Ultimate Om, Holy Harmony, and the first studio recordings of the Dalai Lama's Gyume monks — while his own overtone chanting graces Kitaro's Grammy-winning Thinking of You. His later books, including the Hay House bestseller The 7 Secrets of Sound Healing, the Visionary Award-winning The Divine Name, and The Humming Effect — co-authored, like several of his works, with his wife Andi, a licensed psychotherapist and his partner in the work — distil a lifetime of research into practices anyone can use, beginning with the simplest sound of all: a hum. Named one of Watkins' 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People and inducted into the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame, Goldman teaches seminars throughout the United States and Europe from his home base in Boulder, Colorado, where his annual Healing Sounds Intensive draws students from around the world. His teaching rests on a beautifully simple formula — Frequency + Intent = Healing — and a conviction he has spent four decades proving: that sound is not merely something we hear, but a vibrational force that can shift our frequencies, balance our energy centres, and restore us, body and spirit, to harmony.
