Katherine Woodward Thomas
1957 — 2026
Katherine Woodward Thomas (1957–2026) was a New York Times bestselling author, award-winning licensed marriage and family therapist, and a true pioneer of transformational psychology — the woman who taught the modern world that both the beginning and the ending of love can be done consciously. Her first great teaching came from her own longing: single at forty-one and still believing wholeheartedly in love, she turned her therapist's skill inward, identifying and releasing the hidden barriers she herself had built against intimacy. Within a year she had met the man she would marry. The seven-week process she distilled from that journey became Calling in "The One": 7 Weeks to Attract the Love of Your Life (2004), a national bestseller that guided hundreds of thousands of readers — and later, students of her 49 Days to Love course — to clear their inner obstacles and open to genuine partnership. Her second great teaching came from heartbreak. When, after nearly a decade, she and her husband chose to end their marriage, the author of the book on finding love faced an excruciating question: could a marriage end with the same consciousness with which it began? Refusing the bitter script of conventional divorce, they crafted a parting defined by goodwill, generosity, and mutual respect — successfully co-parenting their daughter and remaining, in their own way, family. In 2009 she gave the process a name: conscious uncoupling. When Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin used that phrase to announce their separation in 2014, it entered the global vocabulary overnight, and her 2015 book Conscious Uncoupling: 5 Steps to Living Happily Even After became a New York Times bestseller, nominated for a Books for a Better Life Award — offering the brokenhearted a map for transforming even the most painful ending into a doorway of growth. Across more than 600,000 books sold, features from Time to The Today Show, her co-creation of the Feminine Power courses, and her final work, What's True About You — bridging trauma recovery and the conscious creation of the future — Katherine's message held one consistent, radical kindness: that we are not doomed to repeat our painful patterns, in love or in loss. She died in April 2026, surrounded by her loved ones, but her work continues exactly as she built it to: through the hundreds of Certified Calling in "The One" and Conscious Uncoupling coaches she personally trained and credentialed, her online courses, and two books that remain lifelines — one for those seeking love, and one for those learning to let it go with grace.
