Kino MacGregor is one of the most recognisable yoga teachers on the planet — a Miami native who has carried the demanding, devotional practice of Ashtanga Yoga to a global audience of millions without ever diluting its depth. Born in 1977 and raised in Miami Beach, of Scottish and Japanese descent, she came to yoga at nineteen while battling depression, wandering into her first Ashtanga Mysore-style class in New York City. What she found there changed the course of her life. She went on to earn a master's degree from NYU, but her real education unfolded on the mat and in Mysore, India — where, at twenty-nine, she became one of the youngest teachers ever certified by the legendary K. Pattabhi Jois to teach Ashtanga Yoga. MacGregor's teaching is grounded in a conviction she returns to constantly: yoga is not a workout, and it is certainly not a competition — it is a way of life built on truth, non-violence, and love, open to every body regardless of age, size, shape, or background. Now practising the rarefied Fifth Series while remaining a devoted student of Vipassana meditation, she has written four books — including her memoir Sacred Fire, the two-volume Power of Ashtanga Yoga, and The Yogi Assignment, a thirty-day program for bringing yogic wisdom into everyday life — and her YouTube channel has gathered well over one hundred million views of full-length classes, pose tutorials, and meditations for every level. With her husband and fellow teacher Tim Feldmann, she co-founded the Miami Life Center on Miami Beach in 2006 — a home for traditional Ashtanga practice — and in 2017 she launched Omstars, the world's first yoga TV network, streaming her classes and those of fellow teachers worldwide. Whether guiding a beginner through their first sun salutation on a beach at dawn or demonstrating a breath-defying arm balance, Kino's message stays the same: spiritual strength is real strength, the practice meets you exactly where you are, and you are never not practising.
