Marianne Williamson

Marianne Williamson is one of the most influential spiritual voices of the modern era — the teacher who carried A Course in Miracles from metaphysical bookshops into the mainstream heart of America. Born in Houston in 1952, she studied at Pomona College, spent her twenties searching — including years as a cabaret singer — and in 1977 encountered the book that would change everything: A Course in Miracles, the modern spiritual text whose central teaching is that only love is real, and that a miracle is simply a shift in perception from fear to love. By 1983 she was lecturing on the Course in Los Angeles, and in the darkest years of the AIDS crisis she turned that teaching into action, founding Project Angel Food in 1989 to deliver meals to homebound people with AIDS — an organisation that has since served millions of meals to the seriously ill. Her 1992 book A Return to Love became a publishing phenomenon after Oprah Winfrey — who would come to call her a spiritual advisor — declared it had given her more miracles than she'd ever experienced from a book. It reached #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, the first of four of her books to do so among seven bestsellers overall, and gave the world one of the most quoted spiritual passages of our time: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure." Across books including A Woman's Worth, Illuminata, Tears to Triumph, and The Age of Miracles, and years as spiritual leader of a Michigan Unity congregation, she has taught a consistent message: that love is a radical force, that our wounds can be doorways, and that personal transformation and the healing of society are one work, not two. That conviction eventually carried her into public life — including runs for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 and 2024, where she argued for what she calls a politics of love.
