Mooji — born Anthony Paul Moo-Young in Port Antonio, Jamaica in 1954 — is one of the most widely beloved spiritual teachers of the non-dual tradition alive today. He moved to London as a young man and spent years working as a street artist and schoolteacher before a profound encounter in 1987 with a Christian mystic set his life on an entirely different course. This awakening deepened further through his meetings in India with the revered Advaita master H.W.L. Poonja (known as Papaji), who himself was a direct disciple of the great sage Ramana Maharshi. What began in a small Brixton chai stall and a tiny apartment in Brixton Hill — where earnest seekers would gather simply to sit in Mooji's radiant, wordless presence — grew organically into a worldwide Satsang movement that now reaches millions. At the heart of Mooji's teaching is the direct inquiry into the nature of the Self — the simple but revolutionary question: "Who am I?" Drawing from the Advaita Vedanta tradition and the pointings of Ramana Maharshi, Mooji guides students to recognise that beneath all thought, emotion, and identity lies a pure, unchanging awareness that is already free. He calls this recognition "Self-abidance," and his method is notable for its extraordinary accessibility — meeting each person exactly where they are, with warmth, wit, and a compassion that is almost tangible. He hosts Satsangs (gatherings in Truth), silent retreats, and intensive programmes at Monte Sahaja, his ashram-community in the Alentejo region of Portugal, as well as in Lisbon, India, and online. Mooji's impact is genuinely global. His YouTube channel has nearly a million subscribers, his teachings have been translated into dozens of languages, and his books — including An Invitation to Freedom and White Fire — are treasured by seekers worldwide. He is widely regarded not simply as a teacher but as a living transmission of stillness, and his Satsangs are described by countless participants as life-altering encounters with the ground of their own being. Whether you encounter him through a five-minute video clip or a ten-day silent retreat, the invitation is always the same: stop, look within, and discover who you truly are.
