Ra Uru Hu

Ascended Master

1948 — 2011

Ra Uru Hu (1948–2011) was the founder — or, as he always insisted, merely the messenger — of the Human Design System, the modern synthesis of self-knowledge that maps a person's nature from the moment of their birth. Born Alan Robert Krakower in Montreal, nothing in his first three and a half decades hinted at mysticism: he earned an arts degree, built a successful career as an advertising executive, magazine publisher, and media producer in Toronto, and expressed his considerable creative streak as a self-taught composer and musician. Then, in 1983, in the midst of a personal crisis, he walked away from all of it — leaving Canada and eventually washing up on the island of Ibiza, where the former media man lived simply and worked as a schoolteacher. What happened next is one of modern spirituality's most extraordinary origin stories. In January 1987, by his account, Krakower was overtaken by an encounter with "the Voice" — an intelligence, he said, far beyond anything he had ever experienced — that held him for eight days and nights and transmitted to him a complete body of knowledge: the Human Design System. He emerged with a new name, Ra Uru Hu, and spent years privately testing what he had received before beginning to teach it internationally in 1992, founding the International Human Design School the same year. The system he transmitted is a striking synthesis — weaving the astrological birth chart, the I Ching's sixty-four hexagrams, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, and the chakra system into the "BodyGraph," a visual map revealing each person's Type, Strategy, and inner Authority. Its five Types — Manifestors, Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, and Reflectors — have since entered the everyday vocabulary of millions of seekers. Ra taught relentlessly for twenty-five years, in a style that was provocative, funny, and utterly allergic to devotion: "Don't trust me, don't believe in me," he told every audience — "find out for yourself," through the seven-year experiment of living one's own design. He died of a heart attack at his home on Ibiza in March 2011, survived by his wife and children, who continue his work through Jovian Archive — the family company that safeguards the original teachings — alongside the IHDS and the free chart tools that now introduce his system to new generations. His deepest teaching may be the sentence his students quote most: "If you allow someone to be who they are, and they allow you to be who you are — then that is love. Anything else is torture." The system he carried exists, he said, for exactly that: the return to who you actually are.
