Rupert Sheldrake

Rupert Sheldrake is an English biologist, author, and one of the most provocative thinkers working at the frontier between science and spirituality. Born in Newark-on-Trent in 1942, his credentials are firmly rooted in the scientific establishment: he studied natural sciences at Cambridge and philosophy at Harvard, earned a PhD in biochemistry, and became a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, where he served as Director of Studies in Cell Biology and a Research Fellow of the Royal Society. He spent years in India as a plant physiologist and lived for a time in a Benedictine ashram — experiences that broadened a mind already inclined to ask the questions most scientists leave alone. Sheldrake is best known for his hypothesis of morphic resonance — the bold proposal, introduced in his 1981 book A New Science of Life, that nature has a kind of memory, and that the forms and behaviours of living things are shaped by a collective field inherited from all that came before. From there his curiosity has ranged across territory conventional science tends to avoid: the unexplained abilities of animals and people, explored in bestsellers like Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home and The Sense of Being Stared At, and a sweeping critique of scientific dogma in The Science Delusion (published in the US as Science Set Free). At the heart of it all is a single conviction he returns to again and again: that science is at its best not as a fixed belief system, but as an open-ended, open-minded process of inquiry. In more recent works such as Science and Spiritual Practices and Ways to Go Beyond and Why They Work, Sheldrake has turned toward the practical, examining how meditation, gratitude, ritual, pilgrimage, and connection with the natural world can enrich human life — and why, from his perspective, they work. A Fellow of the Institute of Noetic Sciences and named one of the world's "100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People," he continues to write, lecture, and podcast to a global audience. For anyone who senses that reality is stranger and more interconnected than the standard scientific story allows, Rupert Sheldrake offers a rigorous, fearless, and endlessly curious companion for the journey.
