Sam Harris is a neuroscientist, philosopher, and five-time New York Times bestselling author who has carved out a singular place in modern spirituality: a rigorously rational voice for meditation, mindfulness, and the investigation of consciousness — entirely without religion. Born in Los Angeles in 1967, his path took a dramatic early turn: a profound experience at nineteen set him questioning the nature of the mind, and he left Stanford to spend much of the next decade in India and Nepal, sitting long silent retreats and studying with Tibetan, Indian, Burmese, and Western meditation masters, including the renowned Dzogchen teacher Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. He later returned to complete his philosophy degree at Stanford and earn a PhD in neuroscience at UCLA — giving him a rare fluency in both contemplative practice and brain science. Harris first became famous as one of the sharpest critics of organised religion, but his deeper project emerged in Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion (2014) — the argument that the most profound discoveries of the contemplative traditions, including the illusoriness of the self and the possibility of genuine equanimity, are real, testable, and available to anyone, no faith required. Through his influential Making Sense podcast and the Waking Up app he created in 2018, he has guided millions through the theory and practice of meditation, drawing especially on Dzogchen and non-dual traditions alongside Western philosophy of mind. The app reflects his ethics as much as his ideas: free subscriptions for anyone who can't afford one, and a minimum of ten percent of profits donated to effective charities. Precise, unsentimental, and often bracingly honest, Harris offers something rare in the spiritual landscape: a teacher who demands evidence, welcomes doubt, and still insists that training the mind is "the single greatest investment you can make in life." For skeptics, scientists, and anyone who has felt locked out of spirituality by its supernatural packaging, he opens a door — showing that the examined life, and even awakening itself, can rest on reason alone.
