Sharon Salzberg

Sharon Salzberg is a meditation pioneer and New York Times bestselling author who, more than perhaps any other Western teacher, has made lovingkindness a household practice. Born in New York City in 1952, her early life was marked by extraordinary loss — her parents' divorce at four, her mother's death when she was nine, her father's disappearance into the mental health system — and by sixteen she had lived with five different families. When she encountered Buddhism in a college philosophy course, she recognised something that spoke directly to her suffering, and at eighteen she travelled to India on an independent study trip. In January 1971, she walked through the gates of a Burmese vihara in Bodhgaya to sit her first meditation retreat — the beginning of a lifelong path. In 1974, alongside Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein, she co-founded the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts — one of the West's most important homes of Buddhist practice — and she has been teaching ever since, for over fifty years. Her emphasis is on vipassana (insight) and, above all, metta: the "revolutionary art" of lovingkindness, a practice of deliberately cultivating friendship toward ourselves and all beings. Her fourteen books include the seminal Lovingkindness, the NYT bestseller Real Happiness, Real Change, and even a children's book, Kind Karl — all marked by her signature blend of honesty about pain and unshakeable confidence in the heart's capacity to heal. Her secular, demystifying style — "if your mind wanders, simply begin again" — has inspired generations of meditation teachers and wellness voices. Through her Metta Hour podcast (eight million downloads and counting), her Street Lovingkindness video series taking metta off the cushion and into the streets of New York, and retreats and talks worldwide, Salzberg continues to offer a medicine our era badly needs: the trained capacity to meet ourselves, our difficulties, and one another with kindness. Alice Walker put it simply: "Sharon Salzberg has offered the gift of peace to the world." For anyone struggling with self-criticism, loneliness, or a closed heart, her teaching is a warm and practical way home.
